National dental provider Express Dentist ranked Connecticut as the state with the best dental health and Arkansas as the state with the worst in a recent study.
Connecticut was followed by the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Hawaii and New Jersey, rounding out the top five. Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and West Virginia placed just above Arkansas, ranking 47th to 50th.
The study used 25 dental health indicators to determine the rankings, including each state's number of dentists per 100,000 people, Medicaid adult benefits, percentage of adults who visited a dentist in the past year and overall condition of mouth and teeth of all income levels.
Out of a possible score of 100 points, Connecticut earned 86 while Arkansas received 42. Up to four points could be earned for each of the 25 indicators.
