A study from the American Dental Association Science and Research Institute found what could be an easier way to detect radiation exposure by researching the properties of teeth and cement.
Researchers at the ADA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology discovered the magnetic properties of cement were similar to the primary components of teeth and could be used to measure radiation absorption, according to a Sept. 23 news release.
The ADA plans to conduct further studies to investigate the viability of using the measurements in industrial and medical settings.
The cement tested in the study had already been approved by the FDA as the first commercially available material to treat craniofacial defects and bone fractures, the release said.
