The Iowa Dental Board recently restricted the licenses of two dentists for competency issues, the Iowa Capital Dispatch reported July 14.
Ten things to know:
- The board took action against Paymun Bayati, DDS, of Sioux City, and Zavash Zarei-M, DDS, of Coralville.
- Dr. Bayati was charged with failing to maintain a satisfactory standard of competency in implant placement after the board received a complaint from a patient who received four implants.
- A consultant reviewed clinical records of the patient's implants and concluded that Dr. Bayati failed to meet the standard of care.
- The board restricted Dr. Bayati from placing implants. Future violations could result in license revocation, the board said in a June 3 order.
- The board accused Dr. Zarei-M of failing to meet the standard of care in endodontic diagnosis and treatment in some cases. It also found a lack of appropriate documentation and diagnostic quality radiographs in patient records.
- Dr. Zarei-M also allegedly responded to a review by addressing the patient by name and discussing treatment that was performed, and texted a patient in an unprofessional manner, in violation of Iowa regulations.
- According to the June 3 order, Dr. Zarei-M denied the allegations but agreed to a settlement in order to avoid a hearing.
- As part of the settlement, Dr. Zarei-M must pay a penalty of $1,000 within 30 days. Dr. Zarei-M also completed a healthcare communication course and three hours of continuing education related to HIPAA and patient confidentiality.
- Dr. Zarei-M is restricted from practicing endodontics unless he receives board approval to provide such treatment in the future.
- The order against Dr. Zarei-M is subject to final approval by the dental board.
