A total of 657 dental practices have been affected by a ransomware attack on accounts receivable management agency Professional Finance Co.
Professional Finance Co. was able to detect and stop the ransomware attack Feb. 26.
During the incident, however, an unauthorized third party accessed and disabled some of the company's computers, according to a notice shared with Becker's on July 8.
The company launched an investigation, which is ongoing, in which it was found that the unauthorized party accessed files containing some individuals' personal information. Professional Finance Co. notified respective healthcare providers on or around May 5, according to the notice.
Information such as first and last names, addresses, accounts receivable balances and information regarding payments made to accounts, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and health insurance and medical treatment information may have been accessed, according to the notice. The company has not found evidence of personal information being misused.
