Dental office bookkeeper pleads guilty to tax fraud charges

A Kentucky dental practice bookkeeper recently pleaded guilty to federal tax charges, ABC affiliate WTVQ reported May 30.

Kathy Thorner was the office manager and bookkeeper of her husband's dental practice, Ashland, Ky.-based Caring Dentistry. In September 2021, she and her husband, William Thorner, DMD, were charged with federal tax crimes after allegedly spending thousands of dollars on personal expenses and defrauding Internal Revenue Services.

Ms. Thorner admitted to failing to pay taxes while spending $800,000 from business accounts on vacations, retail purchases, jewelry and other personal expenses. She pleaded guilty May 27 to two counts of failing to properly account for and pay taxes and one charge of making a false statement on a tax return.

The charges against Dr. Thorner were dismissed at the request of prosecutors.

Ms. Thorner's sentencing is scheduled for September.
