A shortage of dentists in Vermont is making it hard for Medicaid patients to find care, CBS affiliate WCAX reported May 16.
The shortage of dental practitioners in the area makes it hard for patients to find open appointments, according to Elicia Thompson, DDS, dental director of the Community Health Centers of Burlington. Dental practices are also experiencing higher supply costs and low reimbursements, Dr. Thompson told the news station.
Some dental practices in the state have had to limit the number of Medicaid patients they can see in order to remain financially stable. Charles Seleen, DMD, told the news station that about 60 percent of patients at his practice, Winooski-based Vermont Dental Care, are on Medicaid and they can't afford to accept any more.
