Douglas Peterson, DMD, is the first person with a dental degree to be named a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the University of Connecticut said April 7.
Dr. Peterson is a professor of oral medicine at the Mansfield-based school. He has been involved with ASCO since the 1980s.
The Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology award was established in 2007 and recognizes its members' volunteer service, engagement and dedication to the field of clinical oncology.
Dr. Peterson published his first piece in the ASCO's Journal of Clinical Oncology in 1987. He previously served as the group's first dental degree chair of its Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee and is an inaugural member of ASCO's Cancer Care Delivery Council. He played a lead role in the development of two oral oncology guidelines published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology over the last two years.
Dr. Peterson will be presented with the fellowship award in June.
