The American Dental Association has recommended dentists be on the lookout for potential internet security risks amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation stated that Russian cyberattacks against Ukraine could potentially spill over into organizations in other countries, according to a Feb. 26 news release from the agency.
The ADA advises dental practices to keep systems up to date with security patches, ensure antivirus signature files are current, have multiple current backups, and make sure those backups are inaccessible from those systems. The organization also recommends educating staff about the danger of phishing emails.
Tips from CISA and the FBI on how to protect data:
- Enable multifactor authentication when remote login is possible.
- Have antivirus and antimalware programs conduct regular scans.
- Put in place strong spam filters to prevent phishing emails from reaching end users.
- Update software.
- Filter network traffic.
