An Illinois dentist has been charged with one count of wire fraud for allegedly fraudulently obtaining $1.2 million in medical care loans for procedures he did not perform, according to a Jan. 26 news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
Michael Egan, DDS, 58, owned and operated a dental practice in Tinley Park, Ill. In 2015 and 2016, he allegedly applied for medical care loans from a lending company for patient procedures he did not intend to perform. After obtaining the loans, Dr. Egan allegedly paid portions of the money to the purported dental patients and the recruiters who identified the patients for the loans.
The charge is punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison. An arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 27.
Dr. Egan could not be reached for comment.
