The University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine has appointed Stefan Ruhl, DDS, interim dean, effective Jan. 6.
The appointment comes after the school's current dean, Joseph Zambon, DDS, PhD, announced he would retire Jan. 5 after 39 years at the school.
Dr. Ruhl is a professor and associate chair of the school’s department of oral biology. He is credited as one of the first researchers to catalog saliva proteins.
Dr. Ruhl has been with the university since 2007. He is a past president of the International Association of Dental Research Salivary Research Group, which honored him with the Distinguished Scientist Award in Salivary Research in 2020 and the Salivary Researcher of the Year award in 2014.
Dr. Ruhl is also the editor-in-chief of Clinical Oral Investigations, an editorial board member of the Journal of Dental Research and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
