Current status of US dental practices, by specialty

The majority of dental practices in the U.S. are open and seeing patients, according to a report from the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute for the week of Nov. 15.

The monthly reports track the economic impact of COVID-19 on dental practices. The organization received 1,478 responses for the November report.

Here are the operating statuses of dental practices in the U.S. by specialty:

General practice
Open and business as usual: 63 percent
Open, but lower patient volume than usual: 36.1 percent
Closed and not seeing any patients: 0.9 percent

Oral and maxillofacial surgery
Open and business as usual: 61 percent
Open, but lower patient volume than usual: 39 percent

Endodontics
Open and business as usual: 66.7 percent
Open, but lower patient volume than usual: 29.6 percent
Closed and not seeing any patients: 3.7 percent

Orthodontics
Open and business as usual: 56.3 percent
Open, but lower patient volume than usual: 43.8 percent

Pediatric dentistry
Open and business as usual: 54.5 percent
Open, but lower patient volume than usual: 44.3 percent
Closed and not seeing any patients: 1.2 percent

Periodontics
Open and business as usual: 67.5 percent
Open, but lower patient volume than usual: 27.5 percent
Closed and not seeing any patients: 5 percent

Prosthodontics
Open and business as usual: 80 percent
Open, but lower patient volume than usual: 20 percent
