Joseph Zambon, DDS, PhD, dean of the University of Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Dental Medicine, will retire Jan. 5 after 39 years with the school, according to a Nov. 8. news release from the university.
Dr. Zambon joined the school as a faculty member in 1982. He was appointed dean in 2016 after serving as interim dean for one year. Dr. Zambon is also a SUNY distinguished teaching professor of periodontics and endodontics, a rank given to faculty for their academic contributions.
He is credited with growing the university's research capacity, improving clinical operations and recruiting diverse faculty. The school said it was also able to increase federal grant proposals and visibility under his leadership.
The university said it plans to name an interim dean within weeks and conduct a national search for a permanent appointment.
