The Illinois State Dental Society is warning local offices of a phone scam in which dental offices are called by people posing as officials working for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the dental group said Oct. 22.
The dental society said physicians' offices have been called in an attempt to extort money or steal personal information. There has been an uptick in phone calls to dental society offices and throughout the state, the dental society said.
The warning comes after an Oct. 6 ABC7 report about similar calls made to Chicago physician offices. The DEA uploaded a YouTube video warning of phone scams in March.
In February, the Illinois Board of Dentistry warned dentists of a telephone scam in which callers pretend to be from the dental board and demand money.
