A dentist who urged dentists to resist the proposed Medicare expansions, and five other dentists made headlines last week:
- Richard Levy, DDS, wrote a letter published Oct. 7 in the Wall Street Journal urging dentists to oppose dental benefit expansions under Medicare.
- Kurtis Wirth, DDS, is being sued by family members of Lyle Schmidt, 57, who died after a tooth surgery in Rockford, Ill., for which he was sedated.
- Stewart Perim, DDS, was charged with several counts of insurance fraud after an investigation into his Salisbury, Md.-based dental office's billing practices.
- Stephen Skoly, DMD, was ordered by the Rhode Island Department of Health to stop seeing patients after he publicly defied the state's vaccine mandate for healthcare providers.
- Denis Froehlich, DDS, was arrested and has been accused of practicing dentistry out of his Black Canyon City, Ariz., home without a license.
- Laila Hishaw, DDS, is working to diversify dentistry through her nonprofit, Diversity in Dentistry Mentorships, which will hold its first youth summit in November.
