A Kentucky dentist and office manager were charged with federal tax crimes after allegedly spending thousands of dollars on personal expenses and defrauding Internal Revenue Services, according to a Sept. 20 IRS news release cited by Fox affiliate WCHS-TV.
William Thorner, DMD, and Kathy Thorner, were charged Sept. 16 with multiple federal indictments that claim the couple failed to correctly account for and pay Social Security taxes, making false returns and conspiring to defraud the IRS.
Dr. Thorner owned and operated Ashland, Ky.-based Caring Dentistry, while Ms. Thorner worked as office manager and bookkeeper, according to the report.
The indictment alleges that between January 2013 and December 2017, Caring Dentistry made thousands of dollars of expenditures for the couple's personal benefit. The Thorners are accused of spending more than $900,000 on personal expenses from the Caring Dentistry business account while only paying portions of the payroll taxes due.
The two are also accused of failing to pay more than $93,000 in payroll taxes that were withheld from the practice's employee paychecks, according to the IRS.
The IRS claims the couple also significantly understated their income, while overstating federal withholdings related to Caring Dentistry.
