A Florida man found guilty on two counts of criminal mischief with hate crime enhancements has been sentenced to nearly a year in the county jail.
Daytona Beach, Fla., resident Kyle Christiansen, 34, was found guilty in June for a July 2020 incident in which he painted anti-Asian slurs on two vehicles belonging to the family of a New Smyrna Beach, Fla.-based dentist and placed nails in their driveway.
Mr. Christiansen initially faced up to 15 years in prison for each charge, but he did not meet state sentencing guidelines for prison time because he had no criminal record.
He was sentenced to 364 days in jail followed by three years of house arrest and seven years' probation. In addition to paying $5,000 restitution for vehicular damage and a half-day of lost work, he was ordered to have no contact with the victims and stay away from their workplace. He is required to undergo a mental health evaluation and is not allowed to use the internet except for online classes approved by his probation officer.
