A patient receiving dental care at Topeka, Kan.-based Family and Implant Dental is voicing concern that the practice has closed after she paid them for unfinished care, reports CBS affiliate WIBW-TV.
Brian Newell, DDS, was arrested April 19 on charges of violating a protection order, criminal use of weapons, and criminal threat and harassment by telecom device. Since Dr. Newell's arrest, Family and Implant Dental has been shuttered indefinitely.
Amanda McConnell told WIBW-TV that she went to the practice April 19 for a consultation appointment.
"I went in the first time and had half of my teeth deep root cleaned," Ms. McConnell told the news publication. "They had canceled a previous appointment a couple of weeks ago where I was supposed to have the other half done, and then my appointment for tomorrow was for an image of a crown, and a bridge for one side of my mouth."
The practice canceled her appointment set for May 19, Ms. McConnell said. She had already paid the office $1,400 to cover the full cost and set the follow-up, reports WIBW-TV.
Ms. McConnell said she called the dental office and got a recording saying, "Thank you for calling Family and Implant Dental, Dr. Brian Newell's office this Thursday, April 22. Unfortunately, at this time we are closing our doors to this practice. We are unaware when we'll be reopening."
The office called Ms. McConnell May 17 to cancel her appointment. When she asked about a refund, she said they told her they had no record of her payment, reports WIBW-TV. The news publication confirmed seeing Ms. McConnell's receipt from Family and Implant Dental.
"I'm hoping that I will at least give it my full amount of money that I paid them back," Ms. McConnell told WIBW-TV. "Since I can't get a hold of my record or my X-rays or any of that."
Becker's reached out May 12 to Family and Implant Dental for comment and received no response. The practice's website is currently unavailable.
