The U.S. Department of Defense has granted $1.5 million to the University of Buffalo in New York for its dental school to develop therapies to treat oral cancers, the university announced March 25.
The grant will be distributed to the UB School of Dental Medicine across three years to support research aimed at reducing chronic inflammation and immunosuppression caused by oral cancers.
The research will mainly focus on oral squamous cell carcinoma, the most common type of oral cancer, according to a news release.
Keith Kirkwood, DDS, PhD, professor of oral biology at UB's dental school, will serve as principal investigator for the research.
