An ear, nose and throat surgeon at Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System recently led a team of 16 dental specialists and otolaryngologists to develop an international consensus statement that aims to increase diagnosis of odontogenic sinusitis, an infection of the paranasal sinuses that stems from a dental infection or dental procedure, the health system said March 23.
John Craig, MD, an ENT surgeon at Henry Ford, said the goal of the consensus statement is to boost collaboration between dental providers and otolaryngologists. In turn, that can help reduce missed ODS diagnoses and improve management of the condition.
"What makes this medical consensus innovative and different is the international collaboration between rhinologists and dental specialists to achieve consensus on diagnosing ODS," Dr. Craig said. "The multidisciplinary nature was critical to highlight the importance of collaboration between ENT and dental providers to diagnose the condition."
