Younger dentists, female dentists more likely to participate in CHIP, ADA poll finds

Forty-three percent of American dentists participate in HHS' Children's Health Insurance Program, according to poll results from the American Dental Association.

The ADA released results in August after surveying dentists throughout the country about their participation in CHIP. Below are the percentages of dentists who participate in the program, broken down by demographics:

DSO affiliation

  • Affiliated with DSO: 63 percent

  • Not affiliated with DSO: 41 percent

Gender

  • Female: 49 percent

  • Male: 41 percent

Age

  • 21 - 34 years old: 54 percent

  • 35 - 49 years old: 50 percent

  • 50 - 64 years old: 36 percent

  • 65+ years old: 33 percent

Race

  • Black: 63 percent

  • Latinx: 51 percent

  • Asian: 50 percent

  • White: 39 percent

  • Other race: 53 percent

Specialty

  • Pediatric dentistry: 73 percent

  • Oral surgery: 56 percent

  • Oral pathology: 54 percent

  • Public health: 53 percent

  • General practice: 43 percent

  • Orthodontics: 40 percent

  • Prosthodontics: 29 percent

  • Endodontics: 28 percent

  • Periodontics: 25 percent
