Retired dentist Selma Pierce, DDS, died Dec. 1 after being struck by a car in Salem, Ore., The Oregonian reported.
Police told The Oregonian they believe Dr. Pierce was in the roadway when she was hit, and the driver who struck her stayed at the scene and was cooperative.
An active member of her community, Dr. Pierce organized dental service clinics for patients who couldn't afford care, according to The Oregonian.
Dr. Pierce was also a former candidate for the Oregon House of Representatives, running in both 2018 and 2020. She was married to Bud Pierce, MD, PhD, a Salem-based oncologist who lost a gubernatorial bid in 2016 and is currently in the midst of another one.
“Selma was a dear person who always put others before herself," Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney said in a statement. "She cared deeply for those in need. Selma loved to smile and always searched for ways to make life better for others. She was very devoted to her family. I can't imagine Salem without her."
