California dentist gets license suspended, 6 years in prison for $866K fraud scheme

San Diego dentist April Ambrosio, DDS, pleaded guilty to fraudulently billing insurance companies $866,700, according to an Oct. 21 news release from the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

Dr. Ambrosio, 59, was charged in June 2019 with 75 felony counts of insurance billing fraud and later pleaded guilty to three counts of insurance fraud. The dentist falsely claimed she performed 800 root canals on 100 patients, despite not having specialized training as an endodontist to perform said procedures, according to the DA’s office.

Dr. Ambrosio received a six-year prison term and must pay $405,633 in restitution. Her license to practice dentistry was also suspended last year.
