As a Latinx dentist, Jayme Oliveira, DDS, has a unique perspective on the oral health disparities Latinx communities face, according to local CBS affiliate WTKR.
The North Carolina dentist told WTKR he finds it uncommon for Latinx patients to visit the dentist for routine cleanings or oral health checkups. He said they will usually only see a dentist if they are in pain or experiencing an emergency.
Dr. Oliveira also told WTKR Latinx patients come from hours away because they know he can speak Spanish with them.
"You need to have very clear communication, especially if you're going to pull a tooth," Dr. Oliveira told WTKR. "You need to have the provider know what's going on with you."
To address oral health disparities among Latinx patients, Dr. Oliveira speaks to the community on best oral health practices and provides guidance through Spanish-speaking channels, like the local La Selecta radio station. His practice also provides discount programs so patients can receive care without burdening themselves financially.
