Lexington-based University of Kentucky College of Dentistry has named Jeffrey Okeson, DMD, its dean, a decision made July 8 but still awaiting approval from the university's board of trustees.
Dr. Okeson has been a faculty member at the university for 45 years and currently serves as the dental college's interim dean. During his time at UK, he served as the chief of the orofacial pain division, a role that led him to found and begin directing the UK Orofacial Pain Clinic in 1977.
He has been recognized for his contributions to dentistry, receiving the "International Dentist of the Year" designation from the Academy of Dentistry International and the first-ever distinguished alumni award from UK's College of Dentistry.
"Dr. Okeson has made invaluable contributions to the profession at the state, regional, national and international levels through continuing education and other scholarly activities," David Blackwell, PhD, UK's provost, said in a news release. "He is passionate about continuing to enhance the college's strong reputation."
