Alex Barrera, DDS, discussed ways dentists can take steps to address the health disparities facing the LGBTQ community in a recent blog post for the American Dental Association.
Five of his tips:
- If you have heterosexual privelege, acknowledge it and use it to stand up against discrimination.
- Be mindful of inclusive word choices, and don't make assumptions about anyone's gender or sexuality.
- Be open to making mistakes and continually learning.
- Make sure your allyship is impactful by making it visible.
- Celebrate people's queerness instead of downplaying it.
