Nationally, southern states have the fewest dentists per population, while Mid-Atlantic and Pacific states have the most, according to new data from the 2018 U.S. Health report published by the CDC and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.
Here are the three states with the lowest number of dentists per 100,000 people:
1. Alabama: 40.43
2. Arkansas: 41,67
3. Mississippi: 42.86
4. Delaware: 44.08
5. Georgia: 47.18
Here are the states/areas with the highest number of dentists:
1. Washington, D.C.: 103.89
2. Massachusetts: 82.66
3. Alaska: 79.48
4. New Jersey: 77.63
5. California: 77.49
Despite having 198,517 active dentists nationwide in 2017, the Health Resources and Services Administration found that as of Jun. 30, 2019, more than 53 million Americans lived in dental health professional shortage areas.
