A dentist in Savannah, Ga., has donated 419 custom mouthguards –– a total value of $35,615 –– to local youth sports teams, according to a post from the American Dental Association.
Angela Canfield, DDS, owner of Sandfly Family Dental, founded the Mouth Shield Program in 2014. Since then, she has made hundreds of mouthguards, valued at $85 each and often in the teams' colors.
While most recipients have been football teams,Dr. Canfield made mouthguards for the Savannah Junior DerbyTaunts this year, a roller derby league for girls.
"We decided we wanted to broaden our horizons. We keep talking about football, but there are tons of other sports," Dr. Canfield said. "We wanted girls to be active and to be able to be a team."
