Dentists throughout Wisconsin have formed a coalition to protest a proposed rule that would require them to obtain a permit to provide moderate oral sedation.
The Wisconsin Dentistry Examining Board is expected to sign the proposal that would require dentists to undergo sedation training to obtain a permit.
Dentists in Wisconsin are arguing that the rule changes would raise the cost of treatment. Additionally, the dentists say that patients would be forced to visit specialists instead of their regular dentist for any treatment using sedation.
"The safety and comfort of Wisconsin's dental patients are of paramount concern," the group of dentists said in a statement. "Rising dental fees will only drive patients away from seeing a dentist, especially lower-income patients who often are most in need of sedation dental care."
