Scammers are sending emails to dental professionals pretending to be California Dental Association President Del Brunner, DDS, asking for gift cards, according to an Oct. 14 post from the association.
There have been no reports of CDA members receiving the email. However, the association confirmed that emails are circulating among dental professionals through the state.
The emails are intended to trick the recipient into sending money or purchasing a high-value gift card. After the victim purchases the gift card, they are instructed to send the gift card number and PIN on the back of the card via email.
Specific emails posing as Dr. Brunner are brief and in casual nature, according to the CDA. The emails are not sent from a CDA email address or Dr. Brunner's personal email.
According to the Federal Trade Commission any email asking the recipient to buy a gift care is "a sure sign of a scam."
