S. Timothy Rose, DDS, American Dental Association president from 1998-99, died Sept. 24 at age 77.
As the creator of a Future of Dentistry Committee, Dr. Rose's main focus in his ADA presidency was the profession's future and developing innovative solutions for anticipated challenges.
"We must agree at the onset that we will use the findings of this project in their totality to help lead our profession into the next century," Dr. Rose said to the ADA House of Delegates.
Dr. Rose also pushed for modern electronic communication in the profession and bolstered the role of the ADA’s website.
"[ADA.org] is the gateway to information and information exchange," said Dr. Rose in a 1998 interview. "It will include the ability to interact with colleagues, to gain significant scientific information, to conduct electronic commerce, to use the Internet and to do a host of other activities."
Dr. Rose was born in Charleston, W. Va., and graduated from Columbus-based Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1967. He served as a major in the U.S. Army Dental Corps in Germany from 1967-70, later returning to Ohio State to pursue periodontal training.
Dr. Rose started a periodontal practice in Appleton, Wis., where he settled with his wife, Virginia. He also served as president of the Wisconsin Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology and as a trustee of ADA’s 9th District.
