A High Point, N.C.-based dentist agreed to pay $567,125 to settle allegations that he submitted fraudulent Medicaid claims, according to local CBS affiliate WFMY.
Stefan Simoncic, DDS, of Triad Oral Surgery, was accused of performing medically unnecessary procedures on Medicaid patients. The investigation was part of Operation Root Canal, an investigation by the state's Medicaid investigations division.
Officials claimed that between Jan. 1, 2015, and Aug. 31, 2019, Dr. Simoncic submitted false claims for oral evaluations and anesthesia services that were not medically necessary. The investigation alleged Dr. Simoncic also did not provide correct documentation or performed the services in violation of Medicaid policies.
Since the state began Operation Root Canal, it has reached settlements with 10 dental providers, resulting in more than $6.3 million in repayments to the Medicaid program, WFMY reports.
