San Diego dentist April Ambrosia, DDS, was instructed to stop practicing dentistry amid an alleged $600,000 billing scam, even though her license has not been suspended, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Dr. Ambrosia, 58, was charged in June with 75 felony counts of insurance billing fraud. After the charges were filed, Dr. Ambrosio continued to treat 50 patients. On Sept. 24, the judge agreed with a state prosecutor, stating that Dr. Ambrosio can't be trusted to continue treating patients and must halt her practice while the case is in court.
The judge Polly Shamoon ordered the dentist to stop practicing so she doesn't perform unnecessary procedures for her own financial benefit.
Dr. Ambrosio’s attorney, Kerry Armstrong, asked that the dentist be allowed to work but have someone else in charge of the billing, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Dr. Ambrosio has pleaded not guilty to all charges and faces up to 83 years in prison.
