3 women to know in dental

The Volpe Research Center has created over 200 dental tools and technologies that have influenced how dentistry is practiced globally. Of the VRC’s six principal investigators, four are women.

The American Dental Association highlighted three of these women's contributions to dental care and, ultimately, patient's oral health.

Nicole Ritzert, PhD
Dr. Ritzert is developing a fast and accurate way to assess a person's health through an oral inspection. "We're designing and testing sensors that we can one day use in people's mouths to detect a variety of diseases," she said.

Dr. Ritzert has a bachelor's and master's degree in chemistry, as well as a doctorate in analytical chemistry. She was a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md.

Shinae Kim, PhD
Dr. Kim is creating oral sensors for fast diagnosis of oral diseases and monitoring the progress. She is also investigating the effects of flavored e-cigarette vape on oral health.

Raised in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Kim moved to the U.S. in 2008 as a visiting researcher at Ithaca, N.Y.-based Cornell University. In 2011, she moved to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory for microsystems at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Styliani Alimperti, PhD
Dr. Alimperti is developing methods and technology that reduce patient suffering, specifically from periodontal disease. Patients receiving grafts have a higher risk of gum infections, diabetes and oral malignancies, Dr. Alimperti said. "Although different treatments have been developed against gum diseases, significant challenges remain, such as the high cost of tooth or bone grafts."

Dr. Alimperti received her doctorate in chemical and biological engineering at the University at Buffalo (N.Y.). She also held a position at Boston University and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Boston-based Harvard University developing new tissue engineering methods.
