A former Sioux Falls, S.D., dental office bookkeeper was ordered to pay $100,000 Aug. 26 for embezzling money from her employer, according to the Argus Leader.
Cheryl Callies was also sentenced to five years of suspended penitentiary time, 90 days of jail time and electronic monitoring. She pleaded guilty in July to embezzling more than $120,000 from Thomas Montoya, DDS.
Investigators claimed Ms. Callies had stolen money from Dr. Montoya for more than seven years. However, the statute of limitations forced them to charge Ms. Callies for only the past seven years.
Because of the embezzlement, Dr. Montoya said he had to sell his practice in February 2018.
