The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has updated its 2016 guidance for when pediatric patients undergo deep sedation.
The new guidance recommends that at least two individuals with specific training and credentials be present with the patient who is undergoing deep sedation or general anesthesia for dental treatment.
An independent observer, who has no additional responsibilities, must be present and have the skills to assist with any medical emergency. Dentists must also be certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support to treat patients with general anesthesia.
The 2019 guidance also states that the general anesthesia must be administered by a qualified anesthesia provider, including medical anesthesiologist, certified registered nurse anesthetist, dentist anesthesiologist or second oral surgeon.
