Richard Schott, DDS, and former practice administrator Kendra Glenn are facing federal charges for allegedly defrauding healthcare benefit programs, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Tennessee.
Here's what you should know:
1. Dr. Schott owned and operated Dental Excellence, a dental practice with three locations in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and one location in Lebanon, Tenn. He is charged with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. Ms. Glenn, who served as the practice administrator, faces seven counts of healthcare fraud and one count of conspiracy.
2. If convicted, they could each serve up to 10 years in prison and be ordered to pay up to $250,000 on each count.
3. Between November 2013 and January 2018, Dr. Schott and Ms. Glenn allegedly led a scheme to fraudulently bill several healthcare benefit programs for dental work that hadn't been completed or performed.
4. They're also accused of falsifying dates of service, credentials and supporting documents during that time frame. They allegedly continued to do so after being alerted of a criminal investigation into the company's billing practices.
5. The pair allegedly instructed Dental Excellence employees to lie to insurers about the company's billing practices and punished employees who questioned the illegal activity.
6. Dr. Schott and Ms. Glenn allegedly used proceeds from the scheme for personal gain. Ms. Glenn allegedly received bonuses based on how much money she collected from the fraudulent scheme, according to prosecutors.
