Five New York dentists, along with Bayridge Management Plus Corp., and LBD Management Corp., filed a complaint against Metlif to recover more than $2 million in unpaid claims, according to Crain's New York Business.
Here are five things to know:
1. The dentists involved the complaint are out-of-network providers under Metlife. They allege the insurer previously provided reimbursement with no hassle; however, until this year, Metlife has been withholding reimbursements.
2. In the lawsuit, the dentists claim Metlife demanded radiographs for claims related to one-surface composite restorations. The dentists said the radiographs were irrelevant in determining the treatment needs of the patients.
3. By withholding reimbursements, the dentists claim they do not have the cash flow to operate the practices. The complaint also notes patients are questioning staff over the repeated denials.
4. Metlife is scheduled to file a response to the lawsuit Nov. 1.
5. New York dentists filing lawsuits against insurers has become more common in recent years. In 2017, there were 26 disputes, and this year 18 lawsuits have been filed so far.
