At a United Nations side event, New York City-based NYU College of Dentistry and its World Health Organization Collaborating Center urged UN members to support oral health initiatives.
Here are five things to know:
1. WHO Assistant Director General for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health Svetlana Axelrod called on UN member states, the oral health community and other stakeholders to strengthen their commitment to address oral health.
2. Ms. Axelrod encouraged countries to mobilize resources in order to enhance collaborations and partnerships to create cost-effective oral health initiatives.
3. The event was co-sponsored by the Minister of Health of the Kingdome of Morocco, Anass Doukkali and Isaïe Medah, director general of public health in Burkina Faso representing Minister of Health Nicolas Meda.
4. Sponsors of the event pledged to increase attention to the burdens of oral disease. Colgate-Palmolive and Henry Schein also provided support for the event.
5. Attendees heard expert insight from public health advocates and international oral health experts about global public health challenges and the future costs of unmanaged oral health.
