A Hawaiian state circuit judge found Terry Allen, DDS, guilty in a more than $20,000 insurance fraud scheme, according to Khon 2.
Here are five things to know:
1. While owning Kalaheo (Hawaii) Dental Group, Dr. Allen and his office manager Diane Maldonado illegally billed Hawaii Medical Services Association and Hawaii Dental Services.
2. Dr. Allen was a non-participating HMSA physician. In order to bill the insurer, Dr. Allen used the names and numbers of fellow associates.
3. The dentist also double-charged patients who had dual coverage. He would bill both insurers as the primary insurer while never issuing a refund.
4. Ms. Maldonado was also found guilty of using her niece's dental plan to pay for services for her niece's boyfriend. She was ordered to pay $3,413 in restitution fees to HDS and was placed on deferral status for four years.
5. Dr. Allen was ordered to pay the $20,000 in restitution and a $2,500 fee to the Crime Victims Compensation Fund. He was also placed on a four-year deferral status.
