While the number of dentists has increased over the past 10 years, dentists' earnings have remained stagnant, according to the American Dental Association.

1. In 2014, the average net income for general practitioner dentists was $174,780, with dental specialists earning $322,200.
2. Owner general practitioners earned $183,340 a year while non-owner general practitioners brought in $134,020 in 2014.
3. When adjusted for inflation, average incomes have decreased significantly for all general practitioners since the peak in 2005 of $219,378.
