Byte sales suspended, FDA probes adverse events: 8 clear aligner updates to know

From lawsuit settlements to new legislation, here are eight clear aligner updates to know: 

1. Dentsply Sirona voluntarily suspended the sale and marketing of its Byte clear aligners and impression kits as it conducts a review of regulatory requirements.

2. Orthodontics company uLab introduced Reva, a thermoforming material used to improve clear aligner products. 

3. Franklin, Ind.-based G&H Orthodontics released updates to its Tune clear aligner system, giving orthodontists more control over treatment plans. 

4. The Illinois House of Representatives and Senate passed a bill that would require individuals to visit a dentist within a year of using direct-to-consumer clear aligners.

5. The American Association of Orthodontists urged dentists to report adverse events with direct-to-consumer clear aligners to the FDA.

6. The American Dental Association has made the first U.S. standard for orthodontic sequential aligners available for review.

7. Tempe, Ariz.-based Align Technology announced plans to repurchase $275 million of the company's common stock.

8. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted preliminary approval of a settlement to resolve shareholder derivative litigation involving Tempe, Ariz.-based Align Technology.
