Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said that he plans to sign a bill to ban fluoride in public drinking water, making it the first state to do so, according to a March 9 report from The Wall Street Journal.
In January, HB81 was introduced in the Utah House of Representatives and sent to the state Senate in February, which passed the bill Feb. 21.
The bill prevents cities and communities in the state from adding fluoride to their water systems.
The lawmakers supporting the bill claimed that putting fluoride in water supplies was too expensive.
In 2024, only 66 out of 484 water systems in Utah fluoridated their water, according to data from the CDC.
The American Dental Association and the American Dental Hygienists Association urged Mr. Cox to veto the bill.
