The American Dental Association urged Utah Gov. Spencer Cox to veto a bill that would prohibit water fluoridation in the state.
The Utah legislature passed a bill in February to ban water fluoridation in the state's public drinking water systems. While prohibiting the addition of fluoride to public water supplies, the bill allows people to visit a pharmacist for fluoride supplements to support dental health.
In a Feb. 25 letter to the governor, the ADA said the bill would "adopt public policy that is in complete opposition to the mission of the ADA." The ADA also provided evidence of the costs and health complications associated with ending community water fluoridation.
In addition to writing to the state's governor, the ADA said it assisted the Utah Dental Association with asking dentists to also urge the governor to veto the bill.
