The Tavares (Fla.) City Council voted to remove fluoride from the city's water supply, according to a Dec. 18 report from FOX 35.
Members of the city council voted 4-1 to remove fluoride, citing public complaints as a significant factor in the decision.
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, MD, PhD, who previously recommended against community water fluoridation due to the potential neuropsychiatric risk associated with fluoride exposure, attended the meeting.
Water fluoridation has been heavily contested recently after a federal judge ruled that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency must address the impact that fluoride has in drinking water following a report from the National Toxicology Program. The report stated that drinking water with more than double the recommended limit has been associated with lower IQ levels in children.
