Dental organizations stand by fluoride recommendations: 4 things to know

Dental organizations are sticking to their fluoride recommendations even after a federal district judge ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency must take regulatory action, according to a Sept. 26 news release.

Here are four notes:

1. A federal district court judge ordered the EPA to look into the impact of water fluoridation on children's IQ levels in response to a report from the National Toxicology Program.

2. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association are not changing their recommendations on using optimally fluoridated water to prevent cavities.

3. The AAP and others have raised questions about the ruling that the judge relied on in the decision, claiming that the report has limitations.

4. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine twice rejected previous drafts of the NTP report, and other studies have not found a link between fluoride and IQ levels.
