A panel of reviewers under the National Toxicology Program's Board of Scientific Counselors recommended the NTP revise its draft report on a possible relationship between fluoride and IQ to account for potential study biases and recent literature.
The NTP has been working on a summarization of literature about a possible relationship between fluoride exposure and neurodevelopmental and cognitive health.
NTP Director Rick Woychik brought the panel together to determine whether the NTP resolved concerns with the report expressed by federal agencies, according to a May 11 news release.
The ADA sent recommended revisions for the report in an April 28 letter to Kathleen Gray, PhD, chair of the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors. The ADA said its recommendations were meant to enhance the report’s scientific integrity, clarity, transparency and timeliness. It also noted that its revisions support the scientific literacy of the public and elected officials who oversee fluoridation policies.
The panel made several recommendations to the NTP for its report, such as that the NTP include a statement in its report acknowledging the potential impact of bias on the study conclusions.
The NTP board voted unanimously to adopt the panel's findings and recommendations. Mr. Woychik will then decide whether and how the publications should move forward.
