Access to care, negative emotions associated with dental visits, and a lack of understanding about the connection between oral and overall health are the three main barriers hindering older Americans' oral health, according to a recent survey.
Insurer Delta Dental commissioned Atomik Research, an independent market research agency, to conduct an online survey of 1,010 Americans 50 or older. The survey took place between June 24 and July 1 and was released Sept. 19.
Five findings:
1. Thirty-four percent said the last time they had a routine dental checkup was more than two years ago.
2. Fifty-five percent said they never discussed general health or current medications with their dentist.
3. Thirty-three percent said they would be more likely to see a dentist if they had access to mobile clinics.
4. Forty-six percent said the top reason for forgoing dental visits is because they do not like going or they have a fear of going.
5. Seventy-two percent said they wished they took better care of their teeth when they were younger.
