From the effects of nanozyme therapy on dental plaque to the link between oral bacteria and hypertension, here are five recent dental studies to know:
1. A study from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit found that cuts to Medicaid dental insurance was associated with a 6.9 percent decrease in detection of early-stage oral cancer in California.
2. A study from Philadelphia-based Penn Dental and Indiana University in Bloomington found that "nanozyme" therapy could treat and prevent tooth decay-causing plaque.
3. Researchers from the American Dental Association and the National Institute of Standards and Technology examined how fluid flow affects the mechanical properties of biological tissue using 3D-printed microfluidic chambers, which the ADA said could lead to a greater understanding of behavior of tissues in blood vessels, including the effects of new gum disease drugs on the elasticity of blood vessels.
4. Researchers at NYU College of Dentistry in New York City found that patients given alternative antibiotics to amoxicillin are more than twice as likely to experience dental implant failure compared to those given amoxicillin.
5. A March study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found 10 kinds of oral bacteria that were associated with a higher risk of hypertension in women.
