“It’s just a simple surgical mask, the ones all dentists use commonly,” Dr. Kauffman, a New York City-based dentist, said.

Dr. Kauffman, who usually makes house calls to the homebound elderly, urged caregivers in early March to start wearing a mask and eventually began giving them away.

The dentist has given out hundreds of masks, each bagged and dangling at the end of a long pole. Dr. Kauffman said she will continue giving out masks until she runs out.
