The states with the most dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants per capita

Hawaii has the most dentists, while New Hampshire has the most dental hygienists and Utah has the most dental assistants, all per capita, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Hawaii has 51.72 dentists for every 100,000 residents, New Hampshire has 105.33 hygienists for every 100,000 residents and Utah has 180.94 dental assistants per 100,000 residents.

Data on the number of general dentists, hygienists and assistants in each state are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which updated employment data to reflect 2023 in April. 

Here are the top five states with the most dentists, hygienists and assistants per capita across each profession:

Dentists

1. Hawaii: 51.72 dentists per 100,000 residents

2. Colorado: 50.73 dentists per 100,000 residents

3. California: 48.39 dentists per 100,000 residents

4. Maryland: 47.93 dentists per 100,000 residents

5. Illinois: 46.66 dentists per 100,000 residents

Dental hygienists 

1. New Hampshire: 105.33 hygienists per 100,000 residents

2. North Dakota: 89.99 hygienists per 100,000 residents

3. Utah: 87.72 hygienists per 100,000 residents

4. Connecticut: 87.43 hygienists per 100,000 residents

5. Minnesota: 86.61 hygienists per 100,000 residents

Dental assistants

1. Utah: 180.94 assistants per 100,000 residents

2.  Washington: 156.48 assistants per 100,000 residents

3. Idaho: 153.73 assistants per 100,000 residents

4. California: 146.23 assistants per 100,000 residents

5. Massachusetts: 131.05 assistants per 100,000 residents
